The camera is what makes iOS devices so popular among blind and visually impaired users.
For us, the lens on our iPhone or iPod touch isn't about vacation snaps or documenting bad behavior, but opening a new eye on the world -- not to capture, but to conquer.
Don't know where you are? Open the VizWiz app, take a picture, and ask, "Where am I?" You'll get an answer, which VoiceOver will read aloud.
BlindSquare, is another barrier-breaker. This app integrates VoiceOver with FourSquare, giving blind users information about what's around them, what's nearby, and how to get there.
What I love about this app, which I profiled today, is the bridge it builds between blind user, the popular social networking platform, and the general public checking in at Foursquare locations around the world.
Access to information about what's around you is great, but being part of the same process -- discovering and rating places like everyone else -- is even more empowering.
