Last week, Bookshare celebrated its 10th anniversary a leading global provider of accessible digital books to persons with print disabilities, including vision and cognitive impairments.
In its first decade, Bookshare has built partnerships with publishers, nonprofits, and volunteers to amass an online library of over 135,000 titles -- more than Learning Ally and the National Library Service combined.
More than 180 publishers have contributed titles. The books are scanned and made available as both DAISY audio and refreshable braille format (RBF) files. .
The organization also pioneered digital rights management to protect copyrighted material by restricting access to qualified readers. At the same time, it's developed technologies -- including the Read2Go iPhone app -- to make texts more accessible and portable.
