Apple iChat Indispensable for Many Persons With Disabilities

iChat can serve as a videophone for the deaf.

Text, voice, and video calling through messaging services such as Apple's iChat, while convenient for everyone, is an indispensable means of socializing for many persons with disabilities.

iChat, built into Mac OS X and iOS, lets you connect via the web and converse in your preferred format.

The program provides clear audio, texting with a full keyboard, and video sharp enough to read lips or use sign language.

What I love about these programs, including Skype, is the range of physical and sensory limitations they eliminate in connecting people.

Can't see? Can't hear, Can't move? So what? iChat is still accessible. It's top-notch assistive technology -- all the more because Apple never calls it that.
