Optelec Compact 5 HD Portable Electronic Magnifier

Optelec 5 HD Video Magnifier

Just when apps such as VisionAssist seemed to portend the end of portable CCTVs such as Enhanced Vision's Pebble, makers of high-end magnifiers are responding with new, less-expensive models.

I covered the Pebble-Mini ($295) in my last blog and today profiled Optelec's Compact 5 HD ($895), the first high-def electronic magnifier.

I like the Compact 5: it's lightweight, its optics maintain clarity across varied surfaces, and --for the industry -- is a steal, costing $900 less than the Amigo, also touted for having a wide, tilt-able, reader-friendly screen.

The Compact 5's sleek design, ease of use (e.g. large menu icons), lighting, and display are exceptional.

It's the sort of device anyone with low vision will flip open every day, and keep with them wherever they go.

Whether there are more life-enhancing technologies to invest $895 in is a key consideration. An Apple iPad might offer more overall accessibility. But I think anyone who buys one will get their money's worth in day-to-day use.
